How to use the online budget calculator

Start with your monthly take-home pay (after tax). Then enter your main spending categories. The calculator totals your expenses and shows how much is left over for savings or debt repayment.

Use the leftover figure to decide whether you need to cut costs or can increase savings. Many UK budgeting guides suggest aiming for a regular monthly surplus that you move into a savings or investment account.

Example budget

With £2,800 take-home pay and £2,000 of expenses, you have £800 left each month. That is a savings rate of about 29%. If expenses rise to £2,600, your surplus drops to £200 and your savings rate falls below 10%.
